Royalties and earnings

If you want to know exactly what a sale pays you, and why, here's how BooksOasis calculates earnings on both ebook and print editions, with no commission hiding in either one.

Ebooks: no deduction at all

When a reader buys an ebook edition, the full sale price is yours. There's no percentage taken off the top, no processing cut applied to your royalty specifically, nothing. What the reader pays is what you earn.

Print editions: cost first, then it's yours

A print edition works a little differently, because a physical book has to be printed. On a print sale, the printing cost and a print handling fee of 30% of that printing cost come out of the sale price first. Whatever is left is yours. Shipping is paid by the reader at checkout, so it never comes out of your earnings. Your dashboard shows each print format's printing cost and its minimum price (printing cost plus the fee), and a print format can't be sold below that minimum.

Every sale, recorded

Every sale, ebook or print, is written to a ledger you can see from your dashboard. It shows exactly what came in and what it earned you, so there's no guessing about where a number came from.

Why this is different from a commission model

A commission-based marketplace takes a percentage of every sale forever, which means the platform's cut grows in absolute terms as you sell more. BooksOasis instead charges a flat plan to list your catalog, so your earnings on any given sale never depend on how much you've already sold that month.

What if my plan lapses?

Sales don't stop just because a plan isn't renewed, but the royalties from them are held rather than paid out until the plan is renewed. See the plan lapses guide for the details.
