No decision divides indie authors more than this one. KDP Select offers Kindle Unlimited readers and Amazon's promotional tools, at the cost of exclusivity. Going wide offers many stores, libraries and direct sales, at the cost of building an audience across them. There is no universal right answer, but there is a right answer for your books.
What KDP Select actually is
According to Amazon, KDP Select is a free 90-day program for Kindle ebooks. While enrolled:
- Exclusivity: the ebook must be sold only through Amazon. The digital edition can't be on Apple, Kobo, your own website or any other store.
- Kindle Unlimited: subscribers can read your ebook, and you are paid from a monthly fund based on the pages they read.
- Promotions: you can run Kindle Countdown Deals and free book promotion days.
- Renewal: enrollment renews in 90-day terms unless you turn off automatic renewal.
Exclusivity covers the ebook only. Paperbacks, hardcovers and audiobooks can be sold anywhere.
How Kindle Unlimited pays
Each month, Amazon sets a fund for KDP Select authors. Your share depends on how many pages Kindle Unlimited readers read of your books, measured with Amazon's standardized page count. The per-page rate changes monthly and is a fraction of a cent, so income depends on volume: long books, series and fast readers generate the most page reads.
Sales to non-subscribers still pay normal KDP royalties: 70% minus delivery on Amazon.com prices from $2.99 to $12.99, or 35% otherwise.
What going wide means
Going wide means selling your ebook everywhere readers buy: Amazon (outside KDP Select), Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Google Play Books, library platforms, subscription services outside Amazon, and direct stores. You publish directly with each, through an aggregator such as Draft2Digital, or both.

Who KDP Select suits
- Authors in Kindle Unlimited-heavy genres, such as romance, thrillers, fantasy and some science fiction.
- Fast releasers, whose new books keep readers moving through a series.
- Long series, where one reader can generate thousands of page reads.
- New authors who want free exposure through Kindle Unlimited readers willing to try unknown names.
- Authors who value simplicity and one dashboard.
Who going wide suits
- Authors with international readers, especially where Kobo, Apple or local stores are strong.
- Authors in genres library readers love, including cosy mysteries, historical fiction and non-fiction.
- Non-fiction and niche authors, whose readers are spread across many stores.
- Authors with a newsletter who want to sell direct at full price.
- Authors worried about concentration risk, who don't want one company controlling their income.
- Authors pricing above $12.99, where Amazon's royalty drops to 35%.
The numbers to check
Before deciding, look at your own data, not other authors' stories. For each book or series, compare:
| Number | Where to find it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle Unlimited page-read income | KDP reports | The income you give up by going wide |
| Amazon sales income | KDP reports | This continues when wide |
| Share of income from Kindle Unlimited | Page-read income divided by total | Above half suggests Select is working |
| Readers outside the US | Newsletter, reviews, sales by marketplace | Signals wide potential |
| Library requests | Reader emails, library enquiries | A sign library income is possible |
A worked example
Imagine a series earning $600 a month on Amazon: $400 from Kindle Unlimited page reads and $200 from sales. Going wide gives up the $400 immediately, while sales elsewhere take months to build.
- If wide stores and direct sales reach $400 a month within a year, you break even, with less dependence on Amazon.
- If they reach $150 a month, Select was the better choice for this series.
That is why the gap in the first months matters. Many authors fund the transition by going wide with a series that earns less from page reads, rather than their biggest earner.
How to test without betting everything
- Pick one series or book.Ideally one with modest Kindle Unlimited income.
- Turn off auto-renewaland note when the current 90-day term ends.
- Prepare the wide listingson Apple, Kobo, B&N, Google and a direct store, ready to publish.
- Publish everywherethe day the term ends.
- Give it 6 to 12 months.Wide income builds slowly; don't judge after one month.
- Compare honestlyand decide for your other books.
Making wide work
Authors who succeed wide tend to do a few things consistently:
- Put the first book in a series on promotion to draw readers into the rest.
- Go direct with the stores that sell best, and use their promotional opportunities.
- Build a newsletter so readers follow you rather than a store.
- Sell direct at full price to the readers who know you.
- Be patient. Wide is a long game.
Where BooksOasis fits for wide authors
Once your ebook is out of KDP Select, you can list it anywhere, including BooksOasis. Here, you keep 100% of the ebook price, for a flat plan, and readers can find you on genre shelves and in search.

BooksOasis for wide authors
- A full-margin store to point your newsletter readers to.
- Readers can buy a whole series from its series page, as ebooks or in print.
- Set promotional prices with start and end dates.
What it doesn't do: an ebook enrolled in KDP Select can't be listed on BooksOasis. BooksOasis doesn't distribute to other stores.
See plans and pricingHow Kindle Unlimited readers behave
Kindle Unlimited readers pay a monthly fee and read as much as they like from the catalog. That shapes what works in Select:
- They try unknown authors readily, because it costs them nothing extra.
- They read fast and often binge whole series.
- Many rarely buy books outside Kindle Unlimited, so leaving Select can mean losing them as readers, not just the income.
If your reviews and emails come from readers who mention Kindle Unlimited, that is a strong signal Select is working for you.
Pricing when you go wide
Going wide gives you more pricing freedom. Barnes & Noble Press and Apple pay 70% at almost any price, so premium-priced box sets and non-fiction can earn more there than on Amazon above $12.99. A common wide strategy is a low or free first-in-series ebook to draw readers in, with the rest of the series at full price. Keep prices consistent across stores, since Amazon may match a lower price it finds elsewhere.
Libraries: the wide author's steady income
Through aggregators and some direct retailers, wide ebooks can be bought by libraries and lent to their members. Library income is rarely dramatic, but it tends to be steady, and library readers often go on to buy an author's other books. It is simply unavailable for ebooks in KDP Select.
Box sets and omnibus editions
Box sets are popular in both models. In Select, a long box set can generate many page reads per borrow. Wide, a box set can be priced as a premium bundle at stores without an upper price band. Some authors keep individual books wide and test a box set in Select, since each ebook is a separate title for enrollment.
A hybrid approach
You don't have to choose once for your whole catalog. Many authors run a hybrid:
| Books | Strategy |
|---|---|
| A fast, genre-heavy series | KDP Select |
| Standalones and non-fiction | Wide |
| Print editions of everything | Everywhere, including direct |
| Box sets | Tested in Select or wide depending on results |
Switching safely, in either direction
From KDP Select to wide
Turn off automatic renewal, wait for the 90-day term to end, then publish everywhere. Listing elsewhere before the term ends breaks the terms.
From wide to KDP Select
Remove the ebook from every other store first, and make sure it has disappeared, including from aggregators' channels and direct stores. Enroll only when it is exclusive, because Amazon can check.
Common mistakes
- Judging wide after a month. Wide stores need time and promotion.
- Forgetting stray listings. A lingering copy on another store while enrolled breaks exclusivity.
- Moving your best earner first. Test with a smaller series.
- Ignoring print. Print editions can be sold everywhere regardless of Select.
- Not building a newsletter. Without one, wide readers can't follow you from store to store.

In short
KDP Select rewards authors whose readers live in Kindle Unlimited; going wide rewards authors whose readers are spread across stores, countries and libraries. Look at your own numbers, test with one series, give wide time to work, and keep your print editions everywhere. If you go wide, add a full-margin store like BooksOasis for the readers who follow you.
Questions
What is KDP Select?
A free, 90-day program for Kindle ebooks. While enrolled, the ebook must be exclusive to Amazon. In return, it is included in Kindle Unlimited, earning from page reads, and you can use promotional tools such as Kindle Countdown Deals and free promotion days.
What does going wide mean?
Selling your ebook in many stores, such as Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Google Play and libraries, instead of only on Amazon. You can't be in KDP Select for an ebook that is wide.
Is KDP Select worth it?
It is often worth it in genres where many readers use Kindle Unlimited, such as romance, thrillers and fantasy, especially for fast series. It is often less worth it for authors with international, library or non-Amazon readers.
Does KDP Select exclusivity include paperbacks?
No. Exclusivity applies to the Kindle ebook only. Paperbacks, hardcovers and audiobooks can be sold elsewhere.
Can I switch from KDP Select to wide?
Yes. Turn off automatic renewal and wait for your current 90-day term to end, then publish the ebook in other stores.
How much does Kindle Unlimited pay per page?
The rate changes every month because it depends on the size of the KDP Select fund and total pages read. It is a fraction of a cent per page, so income depends on how many pages readers read.
Can I sell my ebook on my own website while in KDP Select?
No. KDP Select exclusivity means the digital edition can't be sold or given away anywhere else, including your own website, while enrolled.
Can I offer my ebook free to newsletter readers while in KDP Select?
Giving away the full ebook elsewhere, including to your newsletter, isn't allowed while it is enrolled. Many authors offer a separate short story or bonus content instead.
Is wide better for non-fiction?
Often, yes. Non-fiction readers are spread across many stores and libraries, and non-fiction is often priced higher, where Amazon's 35% rate above 2.99 makes other stores comparatively attractive.
How long should I test going wide?
At least six months, ideally twelve. Wide income builds gradually as stores, readers and libraries discover your books.
Do Kindle Countdown Deals work outside KDP Select?
No. Kindle Countdown Deals and free promotion days are available only for ebooks enrolled in KDP Select.
Does going wide affect my paperbacks?
No. Paperbacks and hardcovers can be sold anywhere whether or not the ebook is in KDP Select.
